What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder is a condition that occurs when the joints, which connect to the base of the skull on both sides of the head, become inflamed as a result of being overworked or damaged. Over time, the joints will begin to swell, making it harder to open your mouth, eat certain foods, and maintain an enjoyable quality of life.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

Although discomfort is the most common symptom associated with TMJ disorder, it is not the only one that you may experience. Knowing what to look for can indicate when it’s time to see Dr. Lamas for possible treatment.
If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t wait to call our office:
- Pain that forms in the jaw and radiates throughout the head and neck
- Frequent headaches because of the connection between the jaw joints and the base of the skull
- Lockjaw
- Popping or clicking
- Earaches or ringing in the ears
-
Difficulty opening your mouth or chewing food
Types of TMJ Treatment

Treating TMJ disorder requires knowing more about the underlying cause. This could be stress, teeth grinding (bruxism), a misaligned bite, etc. Once we conduct a full evaluation, we will determine if you need one of the following:
Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustments

If you have a bite that is “off,” it may be causing your jaw pain. If we discover this is the problem, we will perform equilibration/occlusal adjustment. This process involves identifying teeth and/or restorations that are causing your bite to be misaligned. Once we alter these areas, you will notice a dramatic difference in how your teeth come together, no longer causing pain to your jaw joints.
Occlusal Splints

If you grind your teeth at night while you sleep, and your jaw is in the incorrect position, we can use a customized occlusal splint to fix the problem. When worn correctly, your teeth will not touch, so the chances of future enamel erosion will dissipate. Your jaw will also adjust to a new position so that the tension is taken off the joints for a more restful and pain-free night’s sleep.
